Manhunt 2 Still Banned in UK

by Christopher Holzworth (2007-10-08)

The British Board of Film Classification, England's equivalent to the ESRB, has once again rejected Manhunt 2. The decision effectively prevents sales of the game within the United Kingdom.

The BBFC dismissed classification of Manhunt 2 back in June on grounds that the game's "unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone [...] constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing."

Rockstar games recently appealed against the original decision after addressing the BBFC's concerns through revisions. Despite these changes, the Board still holds that Rockstar has failed to address their concerns with the game.

Speaking to IGN, Rockstar called the British Board of Film Classification's decision "unacceptable". The developer expressed that the changes necessary to satiate the BBFC would be a setback for the video game industry. Rockstar illustrated how playing Manhunt 2 is a choice, much like choosing to see a horror movie. According to Rockstar, the BBFC should allow consumers to decide for themselves whether the subject material is suitable.

Meanwhile, an M-Rated Manhunt 2 remains slated for its Halloween release in North America.
