Final Fantasy Tactics Director Working on Wii

By Shawn White / September 15, 2006
During Nintendo's Wii Preview 2006 conference in Tokyo, Japan, Yasumi Matsuno - who's worked on Ogre Battle, Vagrant Story, as well as Final Fantasy Tactics and XII - mentioned he's both interested in and working on Wii.

"The Wii controller makes total sense when you think about FPS-like games, but my question was, will the controls fit other existing games?" he asked during a video segment involving developers discussing Wii. "However, when I first tried Mario Galaxy, I realized that the controller fit the game almost scarily well. It allows you to intuitively feel the game and its atmosphere."

Matsuno also agreed with the 'gameplay over graphics' philosophy predominantly held by Wii. "Graphics [these days] have evolved, and there are many games claiming that this generates a more realistic atmosphere," the game director said. "However, there are very few games that have a control interface that lives up to this atmosphere. With the Wii controller you can actually feel like you're touching or living in this atmosphere."

Matsuno, who left Square-Enix during development of Final Fantasy XII, is currently working with an unnamed developer on a new Wii game. More details regarding the title and studio are expected at a later date.

Will Wii see an RPG in the vein of Final Fantasy Tactics, or something entirely different? Stay with The Wiire to find out.
