Nintendo Comments on PS3 Controller Functionality

by Shawn White (2006-05-08)

In a recent CNN Money article, Nintendo responded to Sony's announcement today that the PlayStation 3 controller will incorporate a form of motion-sensing technology.

During Sony's pre-E3 press conference held earlier today, Sony Vice President of Marketing Phil Harrison demoed the added functionality with PlayStation 3 title Warhawk as a means of aerial manuevering. How extensively this controller feature is employed in PlayStation 3 titles at E3 and beyond has yet to be determined.

The redesigned PlayStation 3 controller will not accomodate the full motion-tracking capabilities of the Wii's free-hand unit. Simply put, the PlayStation 3 controller will utilize an acceleromater similiar to the one available in the Wii's nunchuck unit, so although simple tilt motions can be measured with Sony's new controller, the device cannot detect motions relative to space.

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery," a Nintendo representative simply replied when asked for comment from CNN Money.
