Nintendo 'Working On' An Answer To Storage Problem

By Skylar Wilcox / June 17, 2008
For Wii fans hoping for a solution to the data storage problem, the last week or so has been pretty confusing.  Nintendo has remained characteristically quiet on anything in development, leaving gamers to wonder if anything is even in the works.  Fortunately, Nintendo of Europe's Laurent "Geeks and Otaku" Fischer was around to answer that question in a discussion with GamesIndustry.biz.  In his words:

"We definitely detect that [consumers] are serious and we know there is an issue in this, so it's something that we're working on."

So Nintendo will have a storage peripheral to unveil, likely at E3, right?  If only it were that simple.  Fischer says that there's "definitely no plan to issue hardware, an external hard drive, but we know that we have an issue in that area. It's very obvious and we're perfectly aware of it, but there's nothing we can say beyond this."  Apparently it took insulting the system's core fanbase for Fischer to realize just how obvious it is.

There is a way the problem could be solved without additional hardware, though: A software update could add the ability to designate all or part of an SD card to act as Wii memory, allowing Virtual Console games, channels, downloadable extras and save data to be run from the card.  The data could also be tied to a Wii number to prevent piracy.  SD cards four times the size of the Wii's internal memory are readily available for under 20 dollars, so this solution would be cheap and convenient for everyone involved.  Hopefully Nintendo realizes this.
