Nintendo Sues Nyko Over Wireless Nunchuk

By Skylar Wilcox / June 14, 2008

A while back we reported on some companies that were offering wireless Nunchuk alternatives for those who wanted to remove any trace of wires from their controllers, once and for all.  It looks like Nyko's offering, the Kama Wireless Nunchuck (the C is important), might become an involuntary collectible item.

Nintendo is suing the company, claiming that the Kama "wholly appropriates the novel shape, design, overall appearance and even the color and materials used in the Nintendo Nunchuk controller."  Nyko insists that it hasn't willingly violated any intellectual property.

There is clearly a strong resemblance between the Kama and the Nunchuk, but while Nintendo has filed a lot of patents lately, it still doesn't own the patents for white plastic and analog sticks.

This may become a question of whether Nintendo wants anyone else at all producing controllers for its systems; the Wii Remote has proven too complex for any third parties to attempt, which may have been Nintendo's intent.  Look how well Wii Play is still selling because of it.  This lawsuit could set an important precedent for other companies looking to make Nintendo accessories.  We'll just have to wait and see how it goes.
