Sega Talks Platinum Games and Franchises

by Skylar Wilcox (2008-05-20)

Last week, Sega announced its deal to publish titles by Platinum Games, a few days after some information leaked.  This week, the publisher is ready to talk more about the deal and what it means for both companies.

In an interview with GameSpot, Sega of America president Simon Jeffery and VP of marketing Sean Radcliffe mentioned that they were impressed with Platinum's past work as Clover, and that they would work to promote the games more heavily in Western markets than Capcom did, in hopes of attaining commercial as well as critical success.

The reps assured that they wouldn't try to control Platinum's talent, and would try to keep on the ESRB's good side without diluting violent titles like MadWorld.  They mentioned that Platinum is happy to work with whatever platform feels best for a given game, meaning that we probably won't see Bayonetta on Wii or MadWorld on 360.

Jeffery expressed interest in turning each concept into a multiple-game franchise, a troubling thought given how close Capcom came to sucking the originality out of Viewtiful Joe with too many quick sequels.

Jeffery also rather firmly established that Platinum games would only be published through Sega, and that Sega would own their concepts should they split, like Clover did from Capcom.
