According to review-aggregator site GameRankings, 8 out of the top 10 highest-rated Wii games are Japanese, but that doesn't stop Miyamoto from giving American developers the credit for Wii software success. In an interview with Wired, the man behind Mario and Zelda was quoted as saying, "I think America has always been better at creating unique products. ... In Japan, the technology required to create videogames tends to be concentrated in the bigger corporations."
While those who have worked hard to take advantage of the Wii's unique strengths will surely appreciate Miyamoto's praise, it would benefit everyone involved if it served as encouragement for more American developers to live up to his claim. Great games from developers on both sides of the pond are what made the past best-selling systems so great, and with a push in the right direction, they're what will help the Wii truly take its place among them.
