Wii Fit Calls Skinny Kiddie Fat

by Christopher Holzworth (2008-05-07)

This may be the very first instance of Nintendo being the center of gaming controversy. A poster from Disney's community forum, DISboard, claims that Nintendo's Wii Fit ostensibly called their relative fat.

"My [relative] came round this weekend and we let her play on our wii-fit. We have all laughed and joked about being told that we're fat and need to lose weight but I was gobsmacked when it told her that she is overweight. She is a healthy 10 year old girl with an active lifestyle, she swims and dances every week. She is 92lbs and 4ft9" tall and there is not an inch of fat on her."

This is bad math, Nintendo. Americans are very much preoccupied with their appearances and weight. As wrong as it may be, both these factor in to our social acceptance and, courtesy of the media, our self-consciousness is very sensitive. With little girls looking up all wide-eyed to the likes of Hannah Montana and other prefab pop teenie-boppers, implying that they are in any way fat could be emotionally devastating. Shouldn't be, might not be. But probably is.

Will this hurt Wii Fit's sales figures, though? Probably not. But you know how parents can get.
